The Office of Consumer Protection (OPC) announced Monday that Astrofit Gym Blainville Training Center and its president, Sarah Anton, pleaded guilty to charges brought under the Consumer Protection Act on August 31.

At the Business Registrar, businessman James William Awad is listed as the operator of the training centre.

The OPC alleged that Awad and his business partner were “running health studio operations […] in February and March 2022, without having the required permission under the law.”

The company was therefore ordered to pay a fine of $6,000, but Ms. Anton will have to pay a fine of $1,097.

“Additionally, a merchant operating a health studio must have a permit issued by the office and provide a $25,000 bond for each of his establishments. This bond guarantees compliance with the law and can be used to compensate consumers in the event of a business closure,” the Office of Consumer Protection said in a press release.

This is the second time in less than a month that James William Awad and Sara Anton have been fined for operating a fitness center illegally.

In September, Astrofit Gym in East Montreal was ordered to pay fines of $6,000 and $3,000 respectively for conducting RDP.
