Yvette Herrell, a Republican MP from New Mexico, has proposed to provide political asylum to protesters in Ottawa who have been expelled from the Canadian federal capital since Friday.
The elected official suggested introducing a law that would “temporarily provide shelter for innocent Canadian protesters being persecuted by their own government.”
“We can not remain silent when our neighbors in the north are behaving so badly,” she wrote in her Twitter post on Saturday morning.
Republicans did not abandon Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, accusing his administration of “muscle repression” and comparing Canada to a “regime like Venezuela”.
“Just as we have given shelter to political prisoners, we must do the same to tortured truckers, whose assets have been confiscated and bank accounts frozen by a government that is becoming an embarrassment to the free world,” she said.
Keep in mind that almost 76 bank accounts linked to convoys have been frozen this week since the implementation of the Ottawa Emergency Measures Act.
