Permanent residence for 90,000 students and foreign workers

(Ottawa) The Immigration Minister announced Wednesday that Canada will grant permanent resident status to 90,000 foreign students and workers on its territory and help treat patients during the pandemic.

The program comes into effect from May 6 and is intended for workers with at least one year of experience in the healthcare sector in Canada or as a required profession, as well as foreign students who have obtained a diploma there. ‘Graduate studies for the past four years, Minister Marco Mendicino said at a press conference.

The measure calls for Canada to welcome more than 400,000 immigrants by 2021 and compensate for the reduction in the number of those welcomed by 2020 as the epidemic and closure of borders.

“The pandemic highlights the tremendous support of newcomers. These new policies will help us plan for their future in Canada, play a key role in our economic recovery and rebuild better,” Mr Mendicino said.
