Pfizer's vaccine can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a month

The European medicines regulator on Monday approved the storage of the Pfizer / Bioentech COVID-19 vaccine in the refrigerator for up to a month, accelerating its expansion in the European Union.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) says the shelf life in the fridge for unused vases has been extended compared to the five days already authorized.

Since its introduction, the high efficiency of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine has caused difficulties such as storing and transporting pots due to the need for very cold storage conditions.

“The greater ease of vaccine storage and management is expected to have a significant impact on the planning and logistics of vaccine expansion in EU member states,” the Amsterdam-based EMA said.

“This change extends the shelf life of the unopened melt bottle from 2 to 8 ° C (editor’s note, of the regular refrigerator) from five days to one month,” the agency added.

EMA cleared storage of Pfizer / BioMTech vaccine at freezer temperatures between -25 and -15 C over a two-week period in March, as an alternative to long-term storage of pots at medium temperatures – 90 and -60 C in separate freezers.

The EMA followed suit with the United States Medicines Agency (FDA), which made a similar decision in February.
