Prince Philip has undergone ‘surgery’ for a heart problem

London | Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth’s husband, 99, has been hospitalized with an infection for more than two weeks after undergoing “successful surgery” for a pre-existing heart problem, Buckingham Palace announced Thursday.

“The Duke of Edinburgh, who was transferred Monday to St Bartholomew Hospital in London, underwent successful surgery for a pre-existing heart problem yesterday,” Palace said in a statement.

“His Royal Highness will be in the hospital for several days to treat, rest and recover,” he said.

In the hospital since February 16, first at King Edward VII Hospital, Prince Philip has been transferred to this establishment in central London, which has the largest specialized cardiovascular services in Europe, “associated with pre-existing problems” for heart tests, raising fears of his condition.

On Wednesday, Crown Prince Charles’ wife and his son-in-law Camilla indicated that his health had “slightly improved”.

He “suffers at times,” added the Duchess of Cornwall: “We cross our fingers.”

Known for his strong character, but also jokes about his mistakes or bad taste, Prince Philip was hospitalized last month as a “precaution” after falling ill.

Buckingham Palace said the hospital admission a few days later was due to infection.

Her son Prince Charles visited her at the hospital. His grandson William assured the Duke of Edinburgh last week that he was well and that doctors were “keeping an eye on him”.

Longevity record

Prince Philip, celebrating his 100th birthday in June, broke the longevity record of spouses of British emperors in 2009 by Charlotte, wife of George III.

He retired in August 2017, having attended more than 22,000 official public events since his wife ascended the throne in 1952.

He has already been hospitalized several times since 2017, due in December 2019 due to recent “health issues in 2019”.

In January 2019, he was in a spectacular car accident when a Land Rover overturned on another vehicle coming out of the driveway on the Sandringham Estate. Without escaping, he stopped driving.

Due to the coronavirus epidemic, he was largely confined to Windsor Palace at the age of 94 with the Queen last year, except during the summer at their Scottish Balmoral castle.

Philip was born on June 10, 1921 in Corfu with the titles of Prince of Greece and Denmark. At the age of 18 months, his uncle, King of Greece, had to retire, and his father was expelled from the country after the Greco-Turkish war.

With his parents and four sisters, Philip escapes on a British Army ship.

Sent to Scotland to pursue his education, he enlisted in the British Army in 1939 at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth (south of England).

It was at that time that he first met Princess Elizabeth. Their union was celebrated on November 20, 1947. They have four children (Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward).
