Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab has announced the arrest of a woman who donated a kidney “from a 15-year-old girl” on the Internet for $ 20,000.
“Maryles del Carmen Yedra was arrested in (state) Portugal (…) after illegally offering a kidney for 20,000 USD on a marketplace site,” the prosecutor tweeted.
The prosecutor showed the statement that Kidney was “a 15-year-old girl in perfect condition.”
The prosecutor stressed that authorities would investigate to find out if it was a “criminal network”, but he did not say how the defendant got the kidney or if it was not a question of scandal.
The organ transplant program was halted in 2017 in a country where per capita GDP fell to the level of Haiti due to the worst financial crisis in its history, almost 8 years of recession.
Venezuelan power has blamed economic sanctions on him, especially from the United States. However, health NGOs say that by 2015 the conversion program has begun to show flaws.
