  • Listen to an interview with Education Minister Jean-Franకోois Roberz on QUB Radio:

“It seems the minister has rediscovered the epidemic in his cabinet for almost two years. He’s always late and shocked by the new waves, ”FNEEQ-CSN Vice President Leandre Lapointe said sarcastically in a press release following a briefing by Education Minister on Wednesday.

With classes set to return on January 17, the majority of schools in the province still do not have adequately filtered air and do not have CO2 readers. In addition, N95 type masks have not yet been distributed to teaching staff. “We are still two years later, talking about opening the windows in the middle of the winter as the main solution. The lack of planning is still apparent,” Mr Lapoint added, adding that he now believes teachers are once again on their own to prepare courses that will be given at a distance between now and then.

For its part, the Central des Unions du Quebec (CSQ) welcomed some of the measures announced by the Minister of Education, but questioned the delay in Quebec regarding ventilation, self-tests, masks and the third dose vaccine. “We would like some action to be taken long before the arrival of Omicron. We may not be where we are today! CSQ President Eric Gingross announced.

According to the FNEEQ-CSN, the government is counting on rapid testing at home to prevent the spread of the virus in schools. However, pharmacy delivery of these COVID-19 screening tests has experienced significant delays in recent weeks. In addition, the union condemned the non-existent measures in terms of mental health among students and staff severely affected by the epidemic. “However, it is the duty of the Minister to protect all the people roaming in our schools and to ensure that Omicron does not act like a mere flu,” said FNEEQ-CSN Vice President.

Postponement of Cabinet Reviews: Good action

FNEEQ-CSN congratulated Minister Roberz on agreeing to postpone cabinet reviews due in January, despite dissatisfaction on a number of issues. “This postponement should reduce the pressure on a very weak network,” we read in a press release.

The Quebec Federation of Teachers recalls that returning to face-to-face mode is a priority to ensure better academic supervision of students who have suffered from the effects of the pandemic for nearly two years.
