The Competition Bureau has obtained an order to compel Rogers Communications to provide documents related to an investigation into its Infini Cellular plans.
The federal agency is considering whether Rogers will offer unlimited wireless data plans that are capped by throttling bandwidth when a certain data threshold is reached — causing a significant slowdown in data speeds.
“The Bureau is seeking to determine whether Rogers’ marketing practices raise concerns under the Civil Deceptive Marketing Practices Act. Competition Act“, the company explained, “No conclusions have been drawn regarding the existence of a fault at this time.”
In a statement sent to the media, the company defended its unlimited plan by arguing that the terms were clear.
“Since launching these plans in 2019, we have eliminated data surcharges, which is a positive and significant change for consumers and the competition,” the company argued.
On its website, Rogers currently offers unlimited plans that state the data speed is 1 GB per second, but this speed is throttled after reaching a certain threshold, which varies depending on the plans offered. .
