Star historian Laurent Turkot was pinned to the robbery and called to order his university last fall, but escaped sanctions.
Professor in the Department of History, University of Quebec, Trois-Rivieres (UQTR). Turquoise is regularly invited by the media. In Radio-Canada as in TVA.
For a government agency, he created, among other things, a podcast called Fan D’Histoir, in which he discussed with people like Guyline Tremble and Guy A. LePage. On YouTube, he hosts a channel called History, which has more than 375,000 members.
An anonymous complaint was filed in the summer of 2021 with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the federal granting agency.
Complain about his book Sports and leisure: history from origin to present, Published in 2016 by Gallimard Editions.
Criticized the editor
The SSHRC warned the UQTR that it considered the complaint “acceptable” and set up a committee of three academics to investigate 13 parts of the book.
In front of him, Mr. Turkot defended himself as follows: His book is made up of course notes, which contain sentences that have been translated elsewhere without reference.
He also mentions that footnote references, quotation marks and references can be removed when he or she accidentally tries to “air out” the text, back and forth with the editor.
The UQTR committee’s ruling in October was, in fact, a “violation of responsible investigative conduct.”
In an “official letter” sent to Mr. Turcot Log Through UQTR, Vice-Rector for Research Sebastian Charles wrote: “Some quotes in your book are not displayed that way. […], Which involves exploitation. ⁇
“Very serious”
However, “in light of all the facts”, it was decided that Mr. Turkot would not be granted. The committee ruled that the exploitation was “not intentional and malicious use”, in its report Log Has access (but one part has been modified).
In an interview with NewspaperMr. Charles described the extortion allegations as “extremely serious” and the professor “showed a lack of rigor in the creation and editing of the book”.
Therefore, the “official letter” to Mr. Turkot “reminds me of the importance of hard work in preparation.” [ses] Publication “.
Joined by Newspaper Twice, Laurent Turkot admitted that “some mistakes had been made”, but stressed: it all happened without “bad faith.”
The university contacted his publisher to “accept corrective action”. Called turquoise. Gallimard has since confirmed to us that corrections will be made to the re-release.
According to the rules of the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivieres, “use one’s text in whole or in part without referring to one’s own text or instructions”.

He argued the error was “in good faith”
In the first interview with NewspaperLaurent Turcot denied any responsibility for the stolen parts in his book.
In the second call, the educator admitted that he and others may have made “mistakes”.
“We are always responsible for our text,” Mr. Turcott said.
He stressed that he did not want to “favor” the work of others.
The complaint, according to him, came from revenge on the part of a “colleague” who had “harassed” him for seven years.
“He attacked me physically and verbally!”, He began.
Removal of quotation marks and instructions, in the indictment parts, is described in most cases according to him.
These were transformed into “course notes”, “synthesis book”, “general public”, he stressed.
Also, halfway through the course on the history of sports and leisure he decided to turn his notes into a book. Since then, he has been “more precise” in what he observes.
Letter from a lawyer
In many of the cases raised, the quotation marks actually exist, as he swore in the early version of the manuscript, that Mr. Publisher should be held responsible for the problem. Turquoise believed. He did not send it Log As we requested.
On March 23, he instead sent us a letter from his lawyer, Jean-Franకోois Bertrand, in which he attempted to explain 13 cases:
- For the three parts copied from the Website, Mr. Turkot stated that they were in fact books that had been published in the past, books that he had consulted and that he had quoted anywhere in his work. But he argued that unfortunately these three notes had disappeared during editing.
- Seven other parts copied and used without quotation marks are derived from works quoted elsewhere Sports and leisure, He argues. Mr. Turquoise sees evidence that he did not try to hide his roots.
- According to our analysis, for the other three summaries, Turquoise was unable to provide a clear explanation.
The historian stated that when he learned that a complaint had been lodged against him, he acted quickly. In August, he published an extensive bibliography, including 13 missing references, on one website (laurentturcot.ca). In his view, it “sets things right”.
In the eyes of the editor-in-chief of Laurent Turcotte’s book, the mistakes made by the university professor are “blunders”.
When contacted in Paris, Sophie Cucoanis, head of folio history collections at Galimard, said: “All this is unparalleled mistake.
In his view it was also a “partnership mistake”.
“The author, assuming he was doing the right thing, cut out the sources of quotation marks and subject reduction and the publisher did not recognize this kind of cut. So sharing is wrong because the author should not do so. And the publisher should see it. ⁇
In addition, “no author or publisher” of the stolen works made any mention of “complaining about this book”, she underlined.
Laurent Turcot University examined his book and found no additional instances of exploitation.
“These are only 13 cases,” he stressed.
He noted that UQTR contained “software that could see where parts of a book came from.”
At the Vice-Rectorate for research, however, the operation was kept in perspective.
“To sift through, it’s probably a little too strong,” Vice-Rector Sebastian Charles replied.
In addition, the file was sent Log There were 13 robbery cases analyzed by UQTR. But to these was added the 14th, more precisely a paragraph without a footnote, and Mr. Turquoise is very similar to what was extracted from a website not mentioned in his book.
In addition, on March 23, Newspaper Received another anonymous submission revealing a similar case in relation to another website. So it’s 15And A potential case of extortion.
