The US rejected any reference to WHO in the text of the resolution, and also rejected an alternative that did not explicitly mention the name of the organization – and instead cited “UN special health agencies,” two diplomatic sources told CNN. China urged the resolution to include references to WHO’s efforts, which prompted rejection from the US.
A State Department spokesman said the Trump administration did want the UNSC to call for a global ceasefire, but said that China was hampering efforts from succeeding.
“In our view, the aim is to support the Secretary General’s call for a global ceasefire. Unfortunately, the PRC has determined to use this resolution to advance false narratives about its response to the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan,” the spokesman said. “In our view, the Council must continue with a limited resolution to support for a ceasefire, or an expanded resolution that fully addresses the need for renewed member states’ commitments for transparency and accountability in the context of COVID-19.”
The spokesman also said China “repeatedly blocked compromises that would allow the Council to move forward.”
UN Secretary General António Guterres has repeatedly called for a global ceasefire and praised the state and non-state actors who have advocated for this impetus.
The rift between the US and China continues to grow, as the US calls on China to be transparent and provide more information to the world about the origin of the virus and China alleges that the US lied about the origin of the virus. The Trump administration has become the leading voice in criticizing how China handled the plague during the first few weeks.
State Department officials repeatedly pointed to the US as the country that provided the most funding for the international crisis – almost $ 6.5 billion in government and non-government contributions, State Secretary Mike Pompeo said earlier this week. Pompeo said the figure was more than 12 times the contribution of China to the pandemic
The Trump administration official also said that if China were more transparent from the start – which could potentially prevent the new corona virus from turning into a pandemic – lives would be saved.
Trump also played down the virus from the start and his administration has been criticized for its disjointed response to the pandemic, which has kept his government under fire.
