There are too many selfish motorists on our roads

It’s over. I no longer cycle in Montreal. I care a lot about my life. I am not safe with motorists on the road.

The City of Montreal has made great efforts to make many streets safer for cyclists. Yet, despite this, many of the Montreal cyclists I meet meet with a ubiquitous fear of the pedal.

This fear is the fear of motorists.

Behaviors to change

Even if you are careful, sometimes accidents happen. However, there is no reason to have a competitive environment on our roads.

Road rage, dangerous driving, doing anything to save five minutes: most people know at least one person who rules the road.

Endangering the lives of the people they share the road with, these reckless people often do not want to speed up, overtake and perform unreasonably dangerous stunts.

I really wonder who these people think they are who think they are the kings of the world in their metal juggernaut. You have to be really selfish to do that.

The lives of commuters, cyclists and other road users should never be put at risk to save a few minutes on a journey, for example.

Develop a sense of security

Yes, we should continue to learn to share the road, continue to create cycle lanes, but I believe the first step is to get problem motorists to correct their unacceptable behavior.

I invite the passengers of these troubled drivers to intervene to remind them of the harm caused by their reckless actions.

It is unacceptable that your selfishness imposes a sense of insecurity on many other road users.
