You asked us COVID-19 questions, we asked the Porcupine Health Unit for answers

You, our listeners and website readers recently asked us two questions about COVID-19. So we turned to the Porcupine Health Unit for answers. Here are the questions and email responses.

If the person whose death number has been 9 since July 19 is at TADH, why has he not been reported as an active case?

· While we do not comment on specific cases, especially with tragic consequences without respect for family and loved ones, we can provide some general comments. As with many medical conditions, including infectious processes, a serious infection can be cured, but the problems can last a long time. Unfortunately the problems also get worse and then the initial condition or infection is related to the end result.

The worker test (recently tested positive) turned out to be a false positive for the families of Extendicare (Timmins) residents. Why was this not reported by PHU and the numbers changed to reflect it?

· There are currently no indications that any cases in the PHU area can be considered false positive.

· According to Public Health Ontario, false positives are very rare. Visit https: // www.publichealthontario.ca/-/Media / Documents / Lab / Kovid-19-lab-testing-faq.pdf? la = en For more information about the test and the results.

· A positive test in a person without symptoms indicates 2 possible scenarios:

· Asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic current infection (e.g. person develops symptoms later) – early infection OR

· Pre-infection (with or without symptoms).

· We learn a lot about asymptomatic cases of COVID-19, but the investigation process is different because each case is unique. This may include repeated testing. The next negative test does not mean that the previous positive test is wrong.
