The incident took place on Fredmere Street around 8 pm. Quebec Liberal Party candidate Brigitte García’s sign was targeted.
“This kind of vandalism sometimes happens during election campaigns, but in isolation. It doesn’t seem like a lot of cases,” said Emily Charlevoix, section chief of the Montreal Fire Safety Service.
Firefighters immediately put out the fire and there was no damage, Smt.me Charlevoix.
In response to the vandalism of the sign, leader Dominic Anglade on Sunday morning invited voters to “respect all the different parties”.
Since the start of the campaign, many signs from all parties have been vandalized, torn down or modified. To combat the many acts of vandalism, the Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ) has in recent days sent all its constituency organizers stickers that read “Don’t give in to threats,” which will be gradually affixed to signs.
