Shawinigan inherits campus from Concordia University in Montreal amid energy transition
“What a beautiful day,” Mayor Michelle Angers said from the start. In the life of a mayor, I will tell you very honestly, this kind of day, we want a lot.
Twenty students and six researchers in the so-called “thematic” pavilion will focus on the electrification of transportation, energy storage and artificial intelligence. This is already a recognized area of Concordia’s competence.
“Our strengths in research and development in electrification are very, very important and link to the entire ecosystem here at Shawinigan,” explained Concordia University Chancellor Graham Carr.
The City of Shawinigan has carved out a niche for itself in the search for energy transition and environmental solutions. Becoming a university town is the icing on the cake for Angers’ mayor.
“I will not hide from you that since I came into office, it has been an old dream to manage Shawinigan University and after three years of negotiations with Concordia, they decided to come and settle in Shawinigan,” he explained.
The campus will house a $40 million battery research center promised by François Legault during the last election campaign.
