The Canadian military has accused the Chinese air force of “endangering Canadian air force members with unprofessional behavior” during recent interactions in international airspace in Asia.

Canadian planes were sent to Japan as part of a multinational effort to enforce sanctions on North Korea.

While on the plane, Canadian planes were spotted facing Chinese military planes trying to change their course “without respecting international security standards,” the military said in a press release Wednesday evening.

In some cases, Canadian pilots had to abruptly change their route “to avoid collisions with aircraft trying to intercept them,” the statement said, adding that Chinese aircraft were sometimes too close and their crew was “clearly visible”.

The Canadian military has also said that this type of military interaction in the international arena is becoming more frequent during missions within the framework of sanctions voted by the UN, and that “diplomatic channels have already addressed this issue.”

The United States last Thursday called on the UN Security Council to tighten sanctions on North Korea following a series of missile launches, including a continental ballistic missile.

But China, a major ally of North Korea, and Russia, whose relations with the West have deteriorated dramatically since the invasion of Ukraine, have vetoed that tougher sanctions would not only increase tensions but also cause negative productivity.
