Pediatric emergencies at Fleurimont Hospital, part of the CIUSSS de l’Estry in Sherbrooke, is one of four intensive care units for children in the province and has experienced the consequences of overheating emergencies.
Sherbrooke Hospital is regularly called upon to treat patients from other areas.
Pediatric emergencies receive many infants, especially those a few weeks old, battling respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and requiring intensive care.
Two additional beds have been added to the existing six beds in intensive care for children.
To meet the needs, the Ministry of Health asked the leaders of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie to add another dozen hospital beds at the Fleurimont hospital.
The union wonders how the management can achieve this even with help expected soon from other private agencies.
Nursing staff are also increasingly requested and concerned by staff shortages and caseloads.
For example, department assistant nurse-head Sylvie Tanguay worked 16 hours online on Sunday. In a twenty-year career, she had never felt the health system was so weakened.
Forced overtime has become commonplace in the department, which has lost five nurses in recent months, according to the union.
Every day, many nurses are given overtime.
The health spokesperson, Vincent Marissal, as well as the member for Sherbrooke, Christine Labrie, said the government is not listening in part to the crisis currently affecting emergency situations.
