Many parts of India are now under locking measures that are not too severe as the country is now entering a third extension of national restrictions designed to stop the spread of the new corona virus.

In a statement issued Friday, the Interior Ministry announced that a further extension of the lockdown from two weeks would last until May 17, with the ease of significant restrictions.

The Indian government has divided the country into zones – red, orange and green – depending on the status of registered cases. Most of the restrictions imposed across India over the past six weeks will be relaxed for cities that fall into the green zone.

However, limited activities will continue to be prohibited throughout the country.

This includes:

  • Travel by air, train, metro, and movement between countries by road.
  • All schools and colleges will continue to be closed together with theaters, malls and places of worship.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs will allow the movement of people by air, train and road only for certain purposes.

Metropolitan cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Pune has been classified as Red zone. This area classification will be evaluated every week.

In Delhi, all government and private offices will be allowed to open, but private offices will work at 33% capacity. All educational institutions, hotels, malls, theaters and public transportation will continue to be closed, said chief minister Arvind Kejriwal during a press conference on Sunday.

“Coronavirus is here and here to stay. It will disappear or we won’t have an infected patient – it will never happen. That does not happen anywhere in the world. This is not possible. We must prepare and learn to live with coronavirus, “said Kejriwal.

The Interior Ministry has asked the state government to issue an order prohibiting the meeting of more than four people from 7 pm. until 7 a.m. Dozens of trains have been arranged in the past few days to transport migrant workers, students and tourists returning home.

India has recorded a total of 42,533 cases, including 1,373 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
