Francois Legault promised REM from east to Llanaudiere

The REM de l’Est project, canceled by the Caisse de Dépot et Placement du Québec, will go up to Llanaudiere to be taken over by the Quebec government, the Réseau de transport metropolitan and the city of Montreal, Prime Minister Legault assured Friday.

The Prime Minister hinted that the project, which has returned to the drawing board after the withdrawal of funds, is progressing much better than expected.

“It is true that the service we offer to the people of Montreal is not ideal. There are all kinds of discussions for a public transportation system in the east of Montreal. But I assure you, this is a non-negotiable situation, I want to tell you today that the project that we hope to present soon will go to Lanaudière,” said Francois Legault on Friday afternoon. He made this commitment in a speech at the Congress of the Federation of Municipalities of Quebec.

The REM de l’Est project, initially estimated at $36 billion, was deemed so expensive by the Caisse that it withdrew from it.

Also, East REM’s initial route ran into a problem in downtown Montreal, but several groups considered burying it.

Finally, some neighborhood residents said they were concerned about a train near their homes.
