Hudson's Bay will open 25 Zellers stores, including five in Quebec

(Toronto) Hudson’s Bay Company on Wednesday unveiled a list of planned locations for its first 25 Zellers stores in various Hudson’s Bay stores across Canada.

Five of these locations are in Quebec: at the Galeries d’Anjou in the east end of Montreal, at the Place Rosemary, on the North Shore of Montreal, at the Galeries de la Capitale, in Quebec City, in the Promenades Gatineau, in the Autauis, and at Carrefour de l’Estrie in Sherbrooke.

Of the nine sites selected for Ontario, two are located in Ottawa: the Rideau Centre, downtown, as well as in the Saint-Laurent Shopping Centre.

Of the four Atlantic provinces, only two locations were chosen, Halifax and Sydney.

The Hudson’s Bay Company announced last August that it would be reviving its Zellers banner, a decade after the discount chain closed most of its stores in Canada. It is committed to offering interior decoration items, toys, baby items, apparel and accessories for pets.

In addition to opening stores, Zellers will launch a new e-commerce website.

Zellers was founded in 1931 and was acquired by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1978. Banner peaked in the late 1990s with about 350 locations before losing ground to big-box competitors like Walmart.

In 2011, Hudson’s Bay Company announced its intention to sell most of its remaining Zellers leases to the American company Target, closing most of the stores until 2013, but Target’s venture into Canada was a failure.
