Five residents of CHSLD Leclerc in Granby decided to go on hunger strike because they felt the food they were being served was not of sufficient quality.

Annie Tetreault was one of the residents who decided to strike. She opined that the problem is not the staff but the quality of the food. Lack of fresh vegetables, overcooked meat, too much brown sauce and frozen food are examples of what is being served at CHSLD Leclerc.

“We decided to start a movement to send a message to CIUSSS Food Services that many people no longer want to eat what we have served to them,” said Ms. Tetreult explains.
When residents brought the issue to management, she said meetings were arranged with food services representatives. However, they didn’t bother to show up. Even the center management said nothing could be done.

“It’s a ping-pong ball, and the only answer we have is the menu is going to evolve in 2023,” she said.
“But for us, 2023 is a long way off, especially when you consider that the center will open in 2021”, the resident stressed.
She specifically decried the lack of diversity. The meals served are always the same and the food is often poorly prepared.
Therefore, judging that their demands were not being heard, several residents of CHSLD Leclerc decided to go on hunger strike in the hope that things would change.
Despite everything, Ms. Tetreault’s doctors do not recommend her to go on strike. Being morbidly obese, her lack of food is dangerous.

However, she thinks the cause is worthy.
Especially since the CHLSD Leclerc story ended up in the media, things started to move.
Residents were finally able to meet CIUSSS Food Services and were assured that the changes would be implemented soon.
