The cause of the disaster remained a mystery till evening. Hydro-Québec intends to let firefighters do their job before starting its investigation.

The new setback comes at the end of a week for the state-owned company, which has had to reconnect more than 1.1 million customers since last Thursday due to a blizzard.

Hydro-Québec’s website has also been down since the start of the day due to a “denial of service” by hackers, possibly Russians, like many websites of government agencies or national interest across the country.
