This was disclosed by the Municipal Corporation through a press release on Monday morning.

“For example, a single-family homeowner may convert a basement into rental accommodation or consider building a garden house in their backyard to accommodate or be close to tenants,” it explains.

“This measure aims, among other things, to speed up housing by adding additional housing or a garden house to a single-dwelling detached building,” it added.

“Sensitive Density”

According to Quebec Mayor Bruno Marchand, this is “a concrete measure to diversify the housing supply and accelerate the creation of homes in the city's territory”.

According to municipal councilor Marie-Pierre Boucher, “the objective of this new measure is to simplify the sensitive density by further simplifying and providing more opportunities to add housing to a detached house.”

However, a permit application is required. A municipal bylaw providing this new opportunity must come into force in June 2024.

A public consultation on these regulatory changes will take place on April 9 at 7pm in the old town hall of Saint-Foy, on the rue de l'Gliss and online.
