Options on Interac machines affect tipping

Tipping options, which are automatically offered to customers when paying with a credit or debit card, or force Canadians to leave a small amount for service. At least that's what the results of a new survey on tipping habits conducted by the managers of personal finance app Hardbacon suggest.

“65% of Canadians have already tipped because of the options provided,” said Julien Brault, co-founder and CEO of the application.

Mr. Tipping is still 15% in service restaurants. Brault notes that this result is “no surprise” as this percentage has been considered the norm for many years.

However, habits seem to have changed especially in non-service branches of cafes, fast food chains or bakeries.

“We're talking about 26% of people who say they're in the habit of leaving a tip,” Mr. Brault said.

“I have the impression that the number of people tipping in non-compulsory establishments is increasing,” he said.
