Ottawa may suspend the arrival of international students in Ontario

The federal government is considering suspending the arrival of international students in Ontario at the request of Premier Doug Ford.

“Currently Ontario is the only province that has requested this, so we are happy to work more closely with them. We will contact their authorities today to formalize this request,” Justin Trudeau told a news conference Friday.

International students are among those exempt from travel restrictions imposed by the Canadian government.

Since the start of the third wave sweeping in Ontario, Prime Minister Doug Ford has repeatedly called on Mr Trudeau to tighten border rules to reduce the entry of new variants.

In Quebec, the Prime Minister’s spokesman confirmed that the Franకోois Legalt government did not intend to make a request in this direction.

Other rejected requests

Prime Minister Doug Ford has called for a two-week hotel ban on people entering the country by car across the U.S. border.

Justin Trudeau, however, indicated that he would not go that far, subject to existing regulations, including screening tests three days before entering the country, house arrest for two weeks and another test on the eighth day.

“Sorry” reaction

Mr Trudeau did not hesitate to criticize people who plan to demonstrate their opposition to health measures on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, which has set up a mega clinic for vaccinations.

“It hurts a lot for people to react like that,” the prime minister began.

People’s Party of Canada leader Maxim Bernier announced his intention to participate on Twitter.

“Unfortunately, the protesters are helping to spread these public health measures. […]. So I ask everyone to do their part, to be careful, to minimize contact, and how are we going to get through it, ”Mr. Trudeau said.

On Facebook, “Quebec is steep!” The show, titled, seems to have been widely aired and indicated the intention for tens of people to participate.
