The results of crucial midterm elections in the United States on Tuesday will inevitably have implications so far because of the influence of our southern neighbors on our policies.

Americans are called to the polls to renew the entire House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate, along with an entire array of locally elected officials.

Republicans are showing growing confidence in their chances of overturning Congress by taking over the House of Representatives and keeping Joe Biden in his slim control of the Senate.

“American democracy is in shambles,” says Raphael Jacob, an associate researcher in the Raoul-Dandurand Chair. An expert in American politics explained that candidates from the Republican camp who are questioning the results of the 2020 presidential election and participating in a pre-riot rally on Capitol Hill could be elected.

“We, disproportionately, in Quebec and in Canada, depend on the stability of American democracy, and until it collapses further, we should be interested in it,” argued the political scientist.

An influential neighbor

The United States is Canada’s only neighbor and its main economic partner, Raphael Jacob recalls.

“On an economic level, we may have serious budget battles with the Republican majority in Congress and Joe Biden in the White House. This may be listed in the markets,” he believed.

The outcome of the election will also have an impact on the conflict in Ukraine, as some of the Republican candidates are reluctant to support sanctions against Russia and Canada is inclined to fully follow its southern neighbor on this file, he adds.

Trump continues the suspense

Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump each fired up their supporters ahead of the ballot that will share their political futures.

The current president has once again urged Americans to “protect democracy,” a last-ditch appeal on the eve of the election that could reduce him to political impotence.

And, Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential candidacy is increasing the excitement.

“I’m going to make a very big announcement on Tuesday, November 15 at Mar-a-Lago”, announced the Republican billionaire at a campaign meeting in Ohio, his home in Florida, on Monday evening.

Until the last moment, Donald Trump cast doubt on the candidacy announced on Monday evening. But he promised not to steal the show from the candidates he supports.

Elon Musk, who just took control of Twitter, jumped into the final hours of the campaign calling for the Republican vote.

The ballot, particularly control of the Senate, is held in a few key states: Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, and North Carolina.
