School support staff affiliated with the Union of Professional and Office Employees (SEPB-Quebec) voted overwhelmingly on Saturday for a five-day strike.
Nearly 91% of the members representing nearly forty trades on the five school boards in the province voted in favor of the strike proposal, after four general meetings on February 13 and 20.
“It simply came to our notice then. We are listening to the ground as the talks have stalled for a long time and we are experiencing growing anger and frustration, ”said Pierre Choinier-Lapoint, executive director of SEPB-Quebec, in a statement on Saturday.
The New Frontiers and Riverside’s Anglophone Service Centers in Monterogy and the Sir Wilfried-Laurer Center in Laurentian voted 88.5% and 94%, respectively, in favor of the strike.
The Francophone Centers of Mary-Victorine (Monterogy) and Marguerite-Bourgeois (Montreal) accepted 90% of the order.
“First, we want the government to understand that we need to be heard in the negotiating table. If he ignores us, we will use our strike order in partnership with our colors or not with other unions. We will assess the situation and make the best strategic choices,” SEPB-Quebec’s National School Support said. Council-CNSS President Mary-Claude Ethiore said.
“Our members have had enough and they have decided to stand up for a contemptuous and undesirable government,” Mr. Choinier-Lapoint concluded.
The collective staff contract expires on March 31, 2020.
