Authorities said Sunday that a 60-year-old surfer in Australia was killed by a 10-foot giant white shark.

Rob Petretti was dispatched by the shark at 10:20 am on the coast of northern New South Wales 9 News reports.

According to the rescue organization Surf Life Saving NSW, other surfers tried to fight the big whites and drag the person to the shore.

“The actions of those people are not heroic in making every effort to save this man,” New South Wales Police Officer Matt Kehoe told the store.

New South Wales Ambulance Inspector Terence Savage said the man was first-aid but could not be rescued.

Authorities say Petretti died on the beach with an injury to the back of his thigh.

“When you get a call to participate in a shark attack, you never know the full extent of the damage until you arrive on the scene,” Savage said. “They did everything they could to save his life, but despite their best efforts, they were unable to do so.”

The state’s primary industry department said the photos confirmed a large white shark was responsible for the attack.

This death marks the third deadliest shark attack in Australia this year.

A diver was killed in January near Esperance on the west coast of Western Australia after a shark killed a 23-year-old wildlife worker on the Great Barrier Reef in April.
