Universities postpone start of new academic year

Teaching at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) will be online at least until January 23, but the University of Montreal is postponing a return to school until January 31. Laval University is considering a return at the end of the month.

UQAM said in a message to its community that the decision was made because the number of new COVID-19 cases in Quebec was “currently too high”.

“In light of recent data on the evolution of the pandemic and after consulting our experts, the ownership of the University of Montreal has decided to extend the duration of distance teaching and research. At least until the end of January, ”Rector Daniel Jutras wrote in a message to his community.

HEC Montreal has also postponed operations on its campus until January 30.

In Quebec City, Laval University also announced that it could offer winter semester courses remotely until at least the end of the month.
